As a direct access immigration barrister based in London I assumed I would be running a small caseload to supplement my normal work – that from solicitors. How this assumption was shown to be wrong is as amusing as its incorrect. The number of Direct Access clients has grown largely due to word of mouth. Ie we win and this breeds further business. I recall being in one room with 4 people from the same small village in the Niger delta who had all gotten visas through me and feeling pleased at having had the opportunity to improve their and their families lives.
Success has led to more work and as well as having gotten a pupil we now have an intern who is shortly to become a full time para legal.
None of the additional staff takes away from my ability to provide top class legal advice. What it does is to take the burden of dealing with such cases away to allow me to concentrate on the law and / or winning the cases in Court.
Things have moved on a long way from where we started and I hope we continue to grow.
